It’s actually a link directly to the New York Times story today that China is pouring money and workers into Iraq to get control of most of the oil the country is producing.
“We lost out,” said Michael Makovsky, a former Defense Department official in the Bush administration who worked on Iraq oil policy. “The Chinese had nothing to do with the war, but from an economic standpoint they are benefiting from it, and our Fifth Fleet and air forces are helping to assure their supply.”
Some unquoted U.S. officials say it’s no big deal because the U.S. now has North Dakota’s Oil Patch, pumping much more oil from the ground than had been imagined.
“Of course it’s about oil; we can’t really deny that,” Gen. John Abizaid, former head of U.S. Central Command and Military Operations in Iraq, said in 2007 on the war in Iraq, which killed 4,488 Americans.
